MY PLEDGES

A Real Payrise For All

After years of real-term wage cuts, workers up and down the country are choosing between feeding their children or heating their homes; from nurses and teachers to rail workers and posties - these past few months have seen record levels of industrial action in the UK.

Everyone has a right to live and work with dignity. That means giving nurses, teachers and public sector workers an above-inflation pay rise, implementing a minimum wage of £15 per hour, banning zero-hours contracts and reversing cruel benefit sanctions.

We need an MP in Southport who will fight for this. Putting more money in people’s pockets means they can afford to spend more in our amazing towns economy.

Green New Deal

As millions struggle to pay their energy bills, fossil fuel giants are taking home record profits. Private profiteering is plunging people into poverty and destroying our planet. Alongside water, rail and mail, it’s time we put energy back where it belongs: in public hands.

Democratic public ownership will empower communities, bring prices down and kickstart a Green New Deal that invests in sustainable energy.

It is not good enough for residents to choose between heating and eating or for elderly people to have to work out what the last possible moment into winter they can afford to heat their homes. Southport deserves a voice that will fight for this.

Housing For The Many

On average, British renters spend  30% of their income on rent. Over one million households are waiting for council and social homes, whilst a quarter of a million people are homeless. Housing is a human right, not a commodity – everyone deserves a decent, safe, warm and affordable place to live.

We need an immediate rent freeze and reduction, an end to no-fault evictions and an urgent mass council home building programme.

People born in Southport should be able to stay here if they want. Not be forced out of the town due to the high cost of housing. I want to see a future in which our children and grandchildren aren’t forced to move away to afford a living.

Tax the Rich to Save the NHS

After years of austerity and privatisation, our NHS is on its knees. It’s time to end outsourcing, invest in a fully funded public system of universal healthcare and build a National Care Service.

The government says there's no more money for our NHS - but they're wrong. We can give our public services the money they need by introducing taxes on the wealthy, raising income tax on the top 5% of earners and making corporations pay their fair share.

Southport has a high proportion of over 65s. We need a fit for purpose social care system that doesn’t let people down. People deserve to spend their retirement in dignity.

Welcome Refugees and A World Free From War

We need to rethink our involvment in military intervention. It isn’t good enough that we help drop bombs onto countries and then close the door on refugees fleeing those war zones.

We should strive for a world in which war, exploitation, and a genuine effort to halt climate disasters mean an end to forced migration. No one wants to flee their homes but they are forced to. We should welcome people. We have an ageing population. We need to recognise that in the next decades we will have huge skill gaps with older people forced to work longer unless there are changes.

A Resilient Local Economy

I will support local businesses and empower community and worker owned cooperatives in Southport, building resilience into our local economy and keeping the local pound in our town for longer. Always choosing small local businesses over big multinationals that take the money out of the local economy.

Let’s build an economy that reinvigorates the town centre and creates good quality employment in our town.

Creating wealth and sustainability in our town, with an economy that is resilient to outside pressure.

Openness, Transparency, and Accountability

I want to represent your voices. For too long people get elected and become unreachable.

I will be visible in the community. Accessible to listen to the issues that matter to you. I will be transparent producing reports on the work I do that will be a two way communication channel.

It is no good having an MP that just tells you what they are doing. I want the community to engage directly with me. This isn’t about giving me power. Its about me bringing that power from westminster to our town and giving you a voice.
